Travel the USA

After the country re-opened after Covid-19, we are
"On the Road Again."
Please enjoy the 'armchair travels' and feel free to make comments.

In September of 2019, we made the
'epic' trip to the east coast for the first birthday of our grandson Evan.
Since Evan's birthday is in September, we decided to join a 29 day RV Caravan for the New England fall color. The tour starts in Maine and ends in Niagara Falls. All told, we did about 12,000 miles with the new truck and trailer.

Missoula, Montana

Fort Missoula -
built to defend against the Indians that never attacked.

The Bicycle Corp
an experiment to see if bicycles could be better than horses to move the troops.

A surprise to learn of the large numbers kept here.

These Tipi Burners were used to burn the sawdust and other by-products from the milling process.  They stopped using them with the Clean Air Act of 1970

We hope to learn more of the Lewis and Clark story as we travel east.

We did a walking tour of "alleys and tunnels"

The basement of the bank had a bomb shelter-
look at their drinking water!

The tunnels under this building are pretty interesting
.

They say that even John Wayne was here.

The local farmers market has some interesting 'shrooms'

The sign said
"follow us @ motherfungi"

Deer Lodge, Montana

A day of visiting the Historic Montana Prison, and a wonderful Auto Museum

There were three elaborate chambers to be unlocked, entered, and locked before moving to the next chamber.
Holes in the ceiling for lowering each appropriate key.

The inmates who murdered the prison guards were  executed by this unusual “Jerk up scaffolding” that utilized a 300 pound weight which was supposed to break their neck.

The device failed and they died by strangulation.

The usual miserable cells (but this one has some kind of a mattress)

But this thing is pretty gross
All we could figure was a statue of a man's head on the body of a rat.
Ugh!

                          On to some fun things---

                                        the Auto Museum

5 miles per flat!

The Yellowstone Trail --first cross country auto road
I-1??

and the display needs 'yellow stones'

I wonder how long it takes the mail for winter deliveries?

This might be the original 'dune buggy'
a very souped up VW bug.

1933 "Kozy Kamper"

I guess tourists always ignore the warnings
"DO NOT FEED THE BEARS"

And on to have a good lunch at "Louie's"

Bannack State Park, Montana

Bannack is a ghost town with a colorful history of an abandoned mining town.

The discovery of gold led to the town becoming the first territorial capital of Montana

The weather has been so smoky and hazy that I just had to 'fix' the views with some attempts at photoshop editing.

The hotel building is a favorite for many movies.

In the 1860's this was a very wild place,
bad whiskey, shootings, and hangings.

“The whiskey was often made with two barrels of water and a few plugs of tobacco with a quantity of camphor and a little strychnine to give it tang to a barrel of pure whiskey, making three barrels of red eye.  When the “forty rod” got near the bottom of the barrel it was so dangerous that a man sometimes dropped dead from the effects of a few glasses, having too much tang never the bottom of the barrel.”

Reminiscences od robert Kirkpatrick, October 1863

I don’t know how many deaths have occurred this winter, but that there have not been twice as many is entirely owing to the fact that drunken men do not shoot well.  There are times when it is really unsafe to go through the Main Street, the bullets whiz around so, and no one thinks of punishing a man for shooting another.”

Letter by Mrs. Emily Meredith April 30, 1863

There are many buildings that have somewhat repaired to make them safer for visitors to experience a view of the Wild West.

Some of the rooms are in pretty good shape

"Prehistoric Microwave"?

By the time the town became more settled, a Masonic Lodge was built,
in combination with a school.

Some of the early builders of Bannack were fine craftsmen and Masons.  Eventually the masons became a brotherhood of men and only required  the members to have only three beliefs:

1.  Belief in a supreme being

2.  Recognition of the Brotherhood of man.

3.  Belief in the Immortality of soul.

Teachers were basically quarantined between 8PM and 6AM

We enjoyed finding a typical Montana saloon to get a good hamburger to end the day.

Star Valley, Wyoming

We stayed in the town of Thayne because there was such a long wait list for the RV park .

County Fair included a rodeo, elephant rides, and the colorful mimes.

Off to the rodeo!

Cute mimes

I'm glad we had done our elephant rides in Thailand!

They are such fun

Love these rides by the beauty queens!

best ever flag ceremony

Lou has cousins (or nephews or some other relatives) that do this kind of craziness!

Star Valley has a great field for model airplanes

This guy has 8 airplanes in this trailer, and enjoys flying all of them.

We met several people from St. George and look forward to returning.
