Travel the USA

After the country re-opened after Covid-19, we are
"On the Road Again."
Please enjoy the 'armchair travels' and feel free to make comments.

In September of 2019, we made the
'epic' trip to the east coast for the first birthday of our grandson Evan.
Since Evan's birthday is in September, we decided to join a 29 day RV Caravan for the New England fall color. The tour starts in Maine and ends in Niagara Falls. All told, we did about 12,000 miles with the new truck and trailer.

Dayton Ohio, Sept 9, 2019

A lovely day in Dayton.  We learned that this was the "Invention Capital" of the US.  It had more patents than any other city at the turn of the century.
Consider this the "Birthplace of Aviation"

The Wright Brothers had a printing business before having a bicycle business.
There were 5 bicycle shops in Dayton over the course of history.
This is the 3rd shop.
It has original flooring and was reclaimed from a low rent housing district.

The printing business was on the upper floor.

The street in front had the asphalt removed and the original bricks are the street now.

This high quality bike was $150.00
Quite a high price considering that the average salary was $400/year.
An average bike would cost about $50.00

The brothers were extremely good craftsmen and businessmen.
The newly invented bicycle was a 'transition' between horses and cars.
It was not just a recreational vehicle, it was a way to transport the whole family.

They funded most of the flight costs with the profits from the bicycle shop.

This is the replica of the 1902 glider that they flew at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina.
They chose Kitty Hawk because it was remote and had strong, consistent winds.
It took a week to get there.
They took two trains, a steamer, a small boat, and a ramshackle schooner that barely survived a harrowing storm.

Most of the testing, design and development of controlled, powered flight was done in a large cow pasture in Dayton Ohio.  The owner of the cow pasture just asked that they not run into the cows while testing the aircraft.

Dayton's best known hero's
Paul Laurence Dunbar and the Wright Brothers.

How's this - Organized Graffiti?
Maybe she is just improving the original?

Interesting neighborhood for a lunch stop for
Bar-B-Q

Good food!

We learn later that this OREGON DISTRICT  is where the recent mass shooting was!

Then on to the YARN SHOP!!
This shop dyes all the yarns in the shop.
They also have an interesting and expensive collection of wool to spin into yarn.

This Guanaco is similar to the Vicuna we saw in Peru.  At this price, I think it must be closely related.
In Peru, we saw a coat made out of Vicuna for a cost of $8,000.00.
It felt fabulous, and was under lock and key.

Oh my goodness ----this was an incredible touch and feel experience.
