Preview of MARBLE COLORADO, and the Treasure Mountain Bible Camp

In 1913 Manhattan builders ordered 1.2 million cubic feet for The Equitable Building.

In 1931 the quarry yielded one-hundred-ton slab, 

It was the largest block of marble ever cut - 

f

or the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

also     columns of marble were used in the Lincoln Memorial

Many pieces of marble all around town, and here is a piece that 

is in the camp's "Avalanche Park"

                 

The Marble quarry is only a couple of miles up the road from the camp.

We arrived during some rain, so did not walk far up the historic trail.

(The elevation here is 8600 feet!)

We are looking forward to exploring more of the area (after the days of working at the Bible Camp)

The Wolverton Mill

 A mining engineer from Maine came to Utah in search of the lost Old Spanish Gold Mine.

He didn’t find the fabled treasure, but he build an ingenious mill to both saw the lumber and crush the gold that he did find.

He was able to barter lumber for other supplies in the remote parts of the Henry Mountains

(The mill has been relocated to Hanksville - still pretty remote!)

The sign at the overlook was pretty interesting!

I guess it is too bad that so many campers are finding all the campgrounds filled up.

 

   2 other campers joined us in this wide open space at the end of the second day.

The Road Less Travelled

Directions said take the River Ford road.

I didn’t think that was literal!
